YAPHANK, NY —June 15, 2023 — Caithness Long Island, LLC, recently awarded $25,000 in scholarships to 28 graduating high school students, who plan to continue their studies in science, engineering or the environment at the college or university level, as part of the company’s Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarship program, which began in 2007. The program is emblematic of Caithness’s longtime commitment to education, which extends beyond the annual scholarship program. It offers internships, job-shadowing programs, and plant tours that teach local students about the latest in power-generation technology and its relationship to the environment, affording them the chance to consider careers in energy-generating technology and related fields.

Since the inception of the Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarship, the program has provided more than $450,000 to 415 high school students from Bellport, Longwood and Patchogue-Medford high schools, which are near the Caithness Long Island Energy Center, a 350-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle, natural gas-fired power-generating station in Yaphank. The awards are based on students’ academic achievements, with recipients selected by their schools’ respective faculty and administrations, and presented at each school’s award night ceremonies held in June. In addition to the scholarship initiative, Caithness also supports several environmental organizations, nonprofit groups, and community-based activities throughout the Town of Brookhaven and across Long Island.

“We at Caithness are pleased to help provide financial support for the next generation of engineers, scientists and related professionals, who will develop solutions to help address some of the most challenging issues that we face today in terms of climate change, energy and the environment,” said Ross D. Ain, President, Caithness Long Island, LLC. “We sincerely wish the best of success to the Class of 2023, as its students enter the next phase in their academic pursuits.”

The Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarship recipients from Bellport
High School are
Owen Adepoju, Wendy Arizaga, Hannah De Los Santos, Kaitlyn Foley, Liany Kasten, Amelia Kocay, Mikael-Anthony Neris and Nikolle Slavnova.

Longwood High School seniors receiving scholarships are Timothy Danler, Ryan Styron, Auben Marcus, Erin Peskin, Nolan Knipfing, Julianna Wehmann, Maya Zoia, Aiden Antonelli and Zavier Berkley.

Graduates from Patchogue-Medford High School who are receiving this year’s scholarships are Alexa Murphy, Emma Krauss, Emily Russo, Mahirah Morshed,
Juliana Meja Martin, Emily Romero Coellar, Diego Coticelli, Ethan Vermaat,
Alexandra Edwards, Kimberly Gomez and Kasmer Appignani.

Commencing commercial operations in August 2009, the Caithness Long Island Energy Center is the cleanest, and most energy-efficient and water-conserving power-generating plant in the region, significantly helping to decrease the region’s carbon footprint. Utilizing highly efficient combined-cycle power-generating technology, and operating primarily on clean natural gas, the plant produces energy more efficiently than any other facility of its kind on Long Island. In addition, it operates much more cleanly than the decades-old, inefficient power-generating units currently operating in Nassau and Suffolk counties, while generating more than 22 percent of Long Island’s power. As a result, Caithness plays a significant role in helping New York State to achieve its goal of a 40-percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2030.
