Caithness Awards $25K in Scholarships to 28 L.I. High School Seniors

Since 2007, more than $475,000 in scholarships has been awarded to 443 graduating seniors from Bellport, Longwood and Patchogue-Medford high schools who plan on pursuing degrees in science, engineering or environmental studies —

YAPHANK, NY — <DATE> — Caithness Long Island, LLC, recently awarded $25,000 in scholarships to 28 graduating high school students planning on furthering their studies in science, engineering or environmental studies at the college or university level. The Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarship program, which began in 2007, represents Caithness’s ongoing commitment to education that extends beyond the annual scholarship program. Caithness offers several educational-related initiatives, including internships, a job-shadowing program, and plant tours that teach local high school students about modern power-generation technology and its relationship to the environment, allowing them the opportunity to consider careers in energy-generating technology, the environment, and related fields.

“Everyone at Caithness wishes the very best of success to the graduates of the Class of 2024, as they embark on the next chapter in their educational pursuits,” said Ross D. Ain, President of Caithness Long Island, LLC. “We’re happy to support the education of future engineers, scientists, and other professionals, who may contribute to finding solutions to today’s challenges in energy production and environmental protection, as well as other pressing societal issues.”

Since its inception, the Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarship has provided $475,000 in financial support to 443 graduating seniors from Bellport, Longwood and Patchogue-Medford high schools, which are in proximity to the Caithness Long Island Energy Center, a 350-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle, natural gas-fired power-generating station in Yaphank that began operating commercially in August 2009, and generates more than 22 percent of Long Island’s power.

The Caithness Long Island Energy Center has been recognized as Long Island’s cleanest, most energy-efficient, and water-conserving power-generating plant. It is significantly helping to decrease the region’s carbon footprint, by utilizing highly efficient combined-cycle power-generating technology and operating primarily on clean natural gas; the plant produces energy more efficiently than any other facility of its kind on Long Island. Caithness is essential for helping New York State achieve its aggressive goal of a 40-percent reduction, by 2030, in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels.
