Caithness Awards $25,000 in Scholarships to 25 Area High School Students

YAPHANK, NY — July 22, 2014 – Caithness Long Island, LLC is pleased to announce this year’s recipients of the Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarships. Continuing its longstanding pledge to provide financial support to high school students interested in pursuing college studies in science, engineering, or the environment. Caithness has awarded $25,000 in scholarship to 25 graduating seniors from the Bellport, Longwood, and Patchogue-Medford school districts. Since its inception in 2007, the scholarship program has distributed more than $225,000 to 185 students to assist them with furthering their education at the college level.

Students were selected to receive the Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarship by their high school administrators. Presentation of the scholarships was made at the senior awards ceremonies held in early June at the respective high schools. Caithness makes the scholarship program available to graduating seniors in the three school districts located in proximity to its CaithnessLong IslandEnergyCenter in Yaphank.
“Caithness is once again pleased to provide financial assistance for the next generation of aspiring engineers, environmentalists and scientists,” said Ross D. Ain, President, Caithness Long Island, LLC. “We wish the graduates well as they prepare to embark on the next phase of their educational pursuits.”
The Caithness Long IslandEnergyCenter is a 350-megawatt, natural gas, combined cycle power generating facility in Yaphank which provides nearly 20% of the power generated on Long Island. Commencing commercial operation in 2009, it is Long Island’s cleanest and most energy-efficient and water-conserving plants, and contributes greatly in reducing the region’s air emission by relying less on older plants that utilize decades-old technologies.
In keeping with its commitment to education, Caithness also provides internships, job shadowing programs, and plant tours to teach students about modern power generation technology, offering them the chance to consider careers in energy and related fields. In addition, Caithness also supports a number of nonprofit organizations and community-based activities throughout the Town of Brookhaven and across Long Island.
