Town of Brookhaven Approves Special Use Permit for Caithness II

YAPHANK, NY  July 15, 2014  The Brookhaven Town Board today approved a special use permit submitted by Caithness Long Island II, LLC for its proposed a 750 megawatt (MW), combined cycle, natural gas-fired power generating plant in Yaphank. The property, on Zorn Boulevard in Yaphank, is within an L-1 Industrial District which allows an electric generating facility by special use permit. The planned site is adjacent to the exiting Caithness Long IslandEnergyCenter, a 350 MW natural gas-fired power station which began commercial operations in 2009.

The Town Board’s approval of the special use permit is another important milestone in the authorization process for this important energy project.
“We are pleased with the Brookhaven Town Board’s support of Caithness II and for recognizing the significant environmental and economic benefits the project will bring to Brookhaven and to Long Island,” said Ross D. Ain, President, Caithness Long Island II, LLC. “The Board’s approval of the special use permit is an important step in moving ahead with what will be the cleanest, most efficient, and most water conserving power plant on Long Island.”
On June 10, 2014 the Brookhaven Town Board issued findings based on the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) prepared for project, concluding that Caithness II, based on its location and design, will not cause any significant adverse environmental impacts.
The Suffolk County Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval of the special use permit at its June 4, 2014 meeting, and in March 2104 the Long Island Regional Planning Council designated Caithness II as a Project of Regional Significance, citing the considerable regional benefits it will bring to Long Island.
Caithness II was selected as the finalist by the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) in July 2013 after an extensive analysis of 45 potential projects submitted in a highly competitive procurement process, subject to Caithness satisfactorily completing the necessary environmental review and negotiating an acceptable power purchase agreement with LIPA. LIPA chose Caithness II as the best project to meet the Authority’s capacity and energy needs, while providing the greatest value to its customers and the environment.
Construction on Caithness II is expected to begin in the latter part of 2015.
