Caithness Awards $50,000 In Scholarships To Local High School Seniors

Company doubles amount previously awarded in celebration of plant being built on time and on budget
NEW YORK June 10, 2010 In celebration of last year’s commissioning of the Caithness Long Island Energy Center having been completed on time and on budget, the company has doubled its annual Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarship. This year thirty graduating seniors from Longwood, Patchogue-Medford and Bellport High Schools will share nearly $50,000.00 in monies made available as part of the company’s ongoing pledge to promote high standards of academic excellence while fostering educational opportunities for students interested in science, engineering or environment studies.

“Doubling this year’s annual scholarship is our way of thanking the community and commemorating the completion of the Caithness Long Island Energy,” said Ross D. Ain, president, Caithness Long Island, LLC. “Earning a college degree is essential in preparing our graduating seniors for the challenges that lie ahead of them and we’re pleased to offer some financial help in this important step in their lives.”
Presentations of the scholarships were made recently at the senior awards programs held at Longwood, Patchogue-Medford and Bellport High Schools. Each year the Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarship provides $25,000 for local high school seniors in the three districts near the Caithness Long Island Energy Center in Yaphank.
The Caithness Long Island Energy Center, a 350-megawatt natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power generating facility commenced commercial operations on August 1, 2009 and is providing clean, reliable energy to the Long Island Power Authority’s customers. It was the first major baseload power plant to be built on Long Island in over thirty years.
